    OCPS is now working with the City to gain permission to use the last remaining structure of the Sprague Street Houses, as a visitor center for the cemetery. It will be located in the park across from the Sprague Street entrance to the cemetery.

  • Families of Oakland Organization Wraps Up Fundraiser

    The Families of Oakland Cemetery organization has just wrapped up a successful fundraiser to fund a study by nationally-known Conservator, Shelley Sass, to assist the board in identifying and classifying the grave stones and monuments in the cemetery. This information will allow us to ensure that these treasures are restored as close as possible to their original beauty and intent.

    Due to storm damage and muddy, unsafe grounds at Oakland Cemetery, the living history presentation “The Ladies of Oakland” scheduled for All Saints Sunday, Nov. 1, has been cancelled. We look forward to hosting another event when the cemetery is in better shape and can be shown off to its advantage. Please consider a contribution to help with the restoration of monuments that have sustained storm damage.

    Oakland Cemetery will come to life on All Saints Sunday, November 1, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., as history students and community volunteers portray women buried in Oakland.

    The Families of Oakland Cemetery organization was formed. This group will provide valuable input from the actual lot owners’ perspective of improvements they would like to see in the cemetery. Anna Maria Sparke Keele is the Chairperson for this group.

  • Blessing of Oakland Scheduled During All Saints Sunday Event

    Monsignor Earl Provenza will offer a blessing of historic Oakland Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. during the All Saints Sunday Tour of the cemetery. The event on Sunday, Nov. 2, will feature students and community volunteers portraying “residents” of Oakland.

    The Oakland Cemetery Preservation Society was reactivated at the behest of former board member, Virginia Shehee. She gathered together previous board members and others who had expressed interested in Oakland and requested that the organization be reactivated.

    A group of community preservationists has reactived the Oakland Cemetery Preservation Society, Inc. (OCPS) and has initiated a bold new plan to restore and preserve one of the most historic sites in northwest Louisiana.

  • Entrance Repair Finished

    The City of Shreveport has used grant funds to repair the entrance to Oakland Cemetery. Craftsman contractors have meticulously poured new concrete gate forms. The gates have been restored by the original manufacturer, Stewart Iron Works in Covington, Kentucky.
